EndNote Plus 2

Type: Software - Platform: Macintosh Classic - Price: 100 DKK

EndNote Plus is the biggest success of Niles & Associates. It organises bibliographical references and can also set up bibliographies in the text documents. By default, the bibliographies will be located in the end (thus the title EndNote), but the data can also be entered in the footnotes.

EndNote Plus is THE tool for anybody who writes papers, especially researchers, university staff, students.

I bought my copy in 1996 when I was enjoying a post-graduate scholarship at the University of Copenhagen. I am the kind of guy who reads everything I can get my hands on about the subject I am examining. Clearly, I needed an efficient tool to manage the hundreds of references piling up in archive boxes. Some colleagues of mine used those boxes, others had loose sheets spread around their offices, whereas the younger guys used various data base software such as Claris Works and FileMaker.

EndNote 2 could administrate references written in all languages I was dealing with (i.e., all European languages), however the sorting order when generating bibliographies follows the English. It took some weeks to enter all the references from my pre-EndNote research into the library file, but it was definitely worth it. Instead of losing hours or even days sorting the references and omitting doubles, EndNote Plus did the job in a matter of seconds. I copied the title of the reference from the EndNote Plus library file, pasted it into the document, and when finished, I activated the Generate Bibliography feature of EndNote Plus, and voila!, a complete bibliography appeared as endnotes of the paper.

Font usage

Contrary to most data base software, it preserves the fonts used. Being a linguist, and working on a Macintosh, you have to joggle with all kinds of fonts. Every linguist has felt the deep frustration once the data so minutely entered into a data base file comes out all stripped of its font features (including when it is exported from, e.g., FileMaker. The bibliography generating feature as well as the font preservation were my reasons for spending my first payment of the scholarship on this software.

Text processing applications

EndNote Plus can process references written in most popular text processors, including MS Word, Claris Works, TexEdit, but the smoothest way to work is with Microsoft Word version 5 and above. Luckily, Word 5.1a was my favorite. I inserted the provided EndNote plugin into the Word Commands folder, and got a few more choices in the Tools menu that made text processor act as if EndNote Plus was just another set of Word commands. Brilliant! I was also able to make searches from various on-line library databases and import them into EndNote plus.

You will get the contents of the box, i.e., End Note Plus 2 Manual, two installation floppy diskettes, one examples floppy diskette, an order sheet for End Link.
